Hurray!!! It is national checklist day or what we call in our office, Amy Stockberger Day!!!
I live for my checklists. I live in my checklists. I LOVE my checklists. From my biz, to my home, for my kids, my dog, for my type A brain; yeah, they run my life. They are living, breathing, beautiful little entities that grow & stretch into something completely different than they started out. They are dynamic works of art that keep me sane.
I say the word checklist so much that our staff likens it to a drinking game, “Amy says checklist, they say drink.” It could get really dangerous if they were really drinking.
When I first started my real estate business a couple decades ago, I had no clue how to run a business & no clue how to take a transaction from contract to close efficiently. The almighty Google did not exist in the form it does now, so finding fast tiny free tidbits to stitch together was not even an option.
We were dead broke, had a new baby at home, a mortgage & two dogs, so spending a lot of money on VHS training tapes (for real, that was a thing) or traveling to conferences was not even close to an option.
Instead, experience became my educator & the only way to apply what I learned from successes & from failures was to create a checklist for every part of my biz.
I read every book I could get my hands on that talked about processes & systems. I listened, very intently, to transactions that seasoned agents in my office were having troubles with & I added it to the checklists.
Any mistake I ever made was added to the checklist. Any victory I accomplished, I re-analyzed all my checklists & added in some spice to them in as many other areas I could to get an even bigger win.
And, it worked. It worked really, really, really well.
Where service will always be king, you need to have repeatable excellence systems. You can’t rely on the human brain to remember every part of the process, no matter how many times you have repeated the step. I tell my staff that all the time: It applies to all of us. Me & them.
I know for a fact the systems & checklists we have created have kept us at the top of our industry. There is not a single part of my business that does not have a checklist attached.
Our checklists range from opening & closing the doors of the building, document changes, client events & of course our transaction & listing coordination & everything in between. We even have a checklist on how to order a name badge. Yes, for real.
Checklists are your business manual. They ensure nothing falls through the cracks. They guarantee each & every client will get the same high level standard of care which means their goals are not only met but exceeded.
Staff turnover happens, but good checklists get the new employee acclimated into their position quickly & efficiently without business being interrupted. No one has time for that.
